Wow! I can't believe the end of summer got away from me like that! Our basement flooded in August, then it was time to get ready for a new school year, and now here it is the end of September already! I meant to finish posting materials from our parent outreach series back in August, but I guess it's bttre late than never!
The second presentation of our VIP series was all about our new math curriculum, Math Expressions. Last year this program was adopted for grades k-6 district-wide. It was quite a big difference from what we had been using before, and parents, students, and teachers alike were having a hard time adjusting to it. Knowing that there was a lot of frustration being experienced on all sides, I thought this would be a good topic for our VIPs.
My biggest goal for the presentation was to demystify the teaching approach and goals of Math Expressions by really making the purpose clear for parents. Then, I wanted to give them some pratical information about some of the math models they were seeing in their children's homework, as well as tips for helping with math. I always find it frustrating when a workshop or presentation doesn't leave me with something I can take away and apply immediately. So, I always try to make sure I include something practical when I am the one leading!
The presentation is below, and you are free to use, borrow from, or change it in anyway, as long as attributions are kept intact. The examples I used were from the third grade curriculum, since that was the grade level this group was familiar with. The ideas on the thrid slide are my attempt at ttranslating the mathematical practices from CCSS into parent-friendly language.
