Welcome to second grade! Last year's students have some special advice for you. Read the comments to see what they had to say about being in second grade in Room 3!
Background: Have you ever found a plane in your closet? In the book The Way Back Home, a boy does! He tries to fly the plane, but he runs out of juice and lands on the moon! But he makes a friend while he's there! What we like about it: We like that there is a lot of adventure and action. We also like how the two friends work together and help each other out. We also like that the setting is in space! Recommendation: This would be a good book for you if you like space and aliens, or if you like to use your imagination. Rating: We give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Background: We had a visitor today! He had fluffy white fur and he didn't say much. That's because... he's a stuffed animal! His name is Will, and he is the main character in the book Will Found a Way. In the book, he does to help people who are sick or hurt. What we like about it: We like that Will is nice to people in need. We also like that people can pet his fur when they're feeling bad. We like the message of hope that Will brings to people. Recommendation: This is a good book for people who are hurt or sad, and for nurses so they can share with people in the hospital. You can learn more and buy your own book here: http://www.willfoundaway.com/ Rating: We give Will Found a Way 4 out of 5 stars! Background: Are you afraid of monsters? Well, the little girl in this book isn't! She is brave. She likes to watch scary movies, and she's not even scared of the monsters that come into her bedroom at night. But she does get very irritated with them, because she can't fall asleep! What we like about it: We like this book because it is funny, like when she makes the sticky, icky booby trap. We also like that the monsters always get out of her traps! Recommendation: This is a great book for boys or girls who like monsters and rhyming books. Rating: We give Monster Trouble 5 out of 5 stars! Background: Betty Bunny is a very funny character. She is a handful, and she doesn't like trying new things. But one thing she does like is chocolate cake! What we like about it: We like this book because it's funny. For example, Betty Bunny says funny things, like "When I grow up, I'm going to marry chocolate cake." She also does funny things, like putting chocolate cake into her pocket so it won't miss her while she's at school! We also like the illustrations because they are super hilarious and colorful. Recommendation: We recommend this book for anyone who likes funny books or LOVES chocolate cake! You would like it, and your friends would too! Go get this book right away! Rating: This is one of the funniest books we've ever read! We give it 5 out of 5 stars! Background: Have you ever read a book that transforms into something else as you read it? Well, Robo-Sauce is that kind of book! In the book, a boy wants to be a robot. What we like about it: We like that everything in the book starts turning into robots. We also like that it's funny, like when he spreads robo-sauce everywhere! Most of all, we like that it transforms into a robot book. We won't give it away, though. You'll have to read it! Recommendation: This book would be good for kids who are into robots and Transformers. It would also be good for people who like action, cooking, and picture books. Because it is a picture book, of course! Rating: Most of us give Robo-Sauce five out of five stars! Background: In this book, there is a skunk following the narrator. What we like about it: This is a very funny book! The skunk just showed up on the narrator's porch one day, and the narrator was scared he would get sprayed. So, he ran away! But the skunk followed him! Chased him! Wouldn't leave him alone! He even followed him to the opera and down into the sewer! The man did some really funny things to try and get away from the skunk. There's a surprise at the end, but we won't give it away. You'll have to find out more by reading it. Recommendation: This is a good book for people who like funny books. Rating: We give this book 5 out of 5 stars! Background: Shubert Sees the Best is about how to be nice to friends. Shubert is a lightning bug who lives in Bug Valley and goes to school with a bunch of other bugs, like his sister Sofie and his teacher, Mrs. Bookbinder, the butterfly. In this story, Shubert goes around asking everybody why they are mean to Crenshaw. Mrs. Bookbinder gives him some special heart-shaped glasses. He can see through the glasses and look inside someone to see how they feel. This is called looking through loving eyes. What we like about it: We like how Shubert is really caring toward others and also very nice. We also like his heart-shaped glasses. This book has a good message of having empathy toward other people. Recommendation: This is a good book for anyone who is learning how to care for others, stop bullying, and have empathy. We also think they should listen to the song "Magic Mirror", by Barry Lane! Rating: We give Shubert Sees the Best 3 out of 5 stars. Did you know that November is National Picture Book Month? Well, we thought this would be a great time to kick off our classroom blog for the year! Each day during November, we will read a picture book, and then we will share them with you! We will post a review here on our classroom happenings blog so you can get to know each book. We hope you enjoy celebrating Picture Book Month with us! Today's picture book is Old Henry, by Joan W. Blos. Background: Old Henry is about a man who moves into an old, dirty, cracked-up, run-down house. He likes it that way because he's comfortable there. The other people in the neighborhood are scolding him for not fixing it up. What we like about it: We like the character of Old Henry, because he never complains. For example, when he moved into the house, he didn't complain about the cracks in the walls, the broken balcony, or the crumbly chimney. We also liked him because he was brave and he didn't care what other people thought of his house. We like the illustrations, too. They were made using colored pencils, and they had lots of details so you could see how broken-down everything was. Recommendation: If you like colorful rhyming books that have a good message, you should read this book! Rating: We give Old Henry 3 out of 5 stars. I'm sure you all remember this book. This was the last chapter book we read together in second grade. This is the book that had half the class voting to finish it instead of going out for our last recess of the year! This is the book that half the class then listened to, sitting on a blanket on the playground while the rest of the class played, even when it started sprinkling! This is the book that you just HAD to know the ending to! The book that we all were CERTAIN would be the first in a series of very funny, very make-you-want-to-read-more-than-play detective stories about kooky fairy tale characters and their misadventures in Fairylandia. But guess what? This book is in trouble! As you boys and girls know, I follow Bruce Hale on Twitter (your parents can, too - tell them to search for @storyguy1). Well, he tweeted the other day that Scholastic has NOT asked him to write more books for this series! Meaning, they haven't decided to make it into a series at all! Meaning, there won't be anymore written! AHHH! We need to do something. This just can't happen to us. Don't the people at Scholastic know that there are readers all over the place just waiting and hoping to hear more from Wolfgang and Ferkel? Wait. They don't? Ooooohhhhhh, the people at Scholastic don't know! They don't realize how much we loved this book. They don't realize how many sad kids there will be if they don't publish more of them! Okay, then. We need to tell them! We need to let Scholastic know that we want more Big Bad! Here's how your parents can help you do that:
Share this post with as many people as you can. I'm posting it to Twitter, too. Hopefully we can get a LOT more readers to help us! With enough people asking for it, Scholastic will have to listen! Leave a comment below and tell me how it goes. |
